A map showing the distribution of tourist attractions in Xinjiang is quite exciting at first glance. Kanas, Hemu, Sayram Lake, Nalati, Kashgar, Baisha Lake, Flaming Mountains, and Tianchi Lake are all on the same map, making it seem like you could visit them all by simply drawing a line.

In front of the barbecue stalls at Xinjiang night markets, there's often a transparent beverage container. The owner turns on the tap, and a light brown liquid pours into a plastic cup, foam rising to the surface. It smells of malt, honey, and a hint of beer. But it's not as bitter as beer; it's sweet and sour, slightly fizzy, which perfectly balances the richness of the lamb.

The Ahe Highway is suitable for those who want to drive through Northern Xinjiang but don't want to rush from one tourist attraction to another every day. In summer, the route offers views of meadows, wildflowers, forests, canyons, wetlands, and snow-capped mountains, making it especially suitable for connecting trips from Altay towards Hemu and Kanas. It's better suited as a leisurely scenic road than as a stopover to shorten the journey.

The sounds of the grasslands arrive first. In a TikTok video, a herd of horses rolls in from afar, their black, brown, and white forms blending together, the sound of hooves like a low rumble of thunder, cutting across the grassy slopes and through the shallow rivers. This is the most memorable scene of the Zhaosu Tianma Festival in Xinjiang: thousands of horses galloping.

Driving from Kashgar to the Pamir Plateau, the scenery outside the window changes from oases and red valleys to snow-capped mountains and high-altitude lakes. Many Singaporean and Malaysian travelers only truly experience the change brought about by altitude after getting off the bus: they are out of breath after walking a few steps, their lips are dry, and the sun shines on their faces while a cold wind blows.

The portions at a Xinjiang restaurant are often more impressive than they appear in photos. A large plate of chicken and potatoes is already piled high, and halfway through, you'll need to add wide noodles to soak up the broth. Baked buns are fresh from the tandoor oven, piping hot on the outside, but inside comes the aroma of mutton, onions, and fat. For Singaporean and Malaysian travelers accustomed to the diverse cuisines of Singapore and Malaysia, these flavors won't be unfamiliar. However, Xinjiang cuisine generally emphasizes mutton, cumin, chili, and staple foods, and it's worth learning about the ordering process beforehand.

The appeal of Xinjiang photography isn't just about "taking photos in traditional ethnic clothing." For first-time travelers flying in from Singapore or Malaysia, it's more like a brief visual transition: from the everyday attire of a tropical city to the colors, patterns, arches, bazaars, and earthen-walled streets of a Silk Road city. Well-taken photos create memorable travel memories; hastily taken ones easily become a series of tourist snapshots filled with costumes but lacking substance.

In early May, the parking lot at the Narat service area had only three vehicles parked. One was a service station van, another was a supply truck unloading cargo, and the third was a tourist who had rented a car. The ticket seller said, "In another month, this place will be full; you'll drive around and not find a spot." She had someone choose a window seat on a shuttle bus in the middle section, and then went to make herself a cup of tea. It was mid-May; the grass in the Ili River Valley had just grown to ankle height, the snow line in the Tianshan Mountains was still low, and the air carried the unique chill of melting snow.
