Food

Tibetan cuisine is an integral part of Chinese food culture.

Tibetan cuisine excels in the diverse preparation of yak meat, mutton, dairy products, barley, potatoes, and other ingredients. The main cooking methods include stewing, braising, simmering, steaming, cooking, frying, and roasting, with an emphasis on tenderness and flavor. Dish pastries are mostly steamed, boiled, or fried. The cuisine offers both high-end delicacies and popular dishes.

The variety of staple and side dishes is quite rich. Currently, the more common ones include cordyceps stewed chicken, cordyceps beef, fried lamb chops, roasted lamb leg, dried meat, cold yak tongue salad, crispy beef steak, blood sausage, stuffed noodle sausage, raw meat sauce, curry potatoes, radish stewed beef, hand-pulled lamb, steamed beef dumplings, soup-filled beef buns, dry tsampa, potato buns, curry rice, masen cake, fern root (ginseng fruit) sweet rice, thu (a type of noodle), as well as a wide variety of snacks and desserts, etc.

Tsampa is a representative Tibetan food. Tsampa is made by roasting whole barley grains and then grinding them on a stone mill. It comes in two types: whole barley and roasted barley. It has a rich barley aroma, can be prepared in many ways, and is very convenient, especially for travel, making it the best convenience food.

Famous Tibetan beverages include not only traditional barley wine, butter tea, sweet tea, milk tea, fresh yak milk, and yogurt made from yak milk, but also modern drinks like Yaowangshan beer (commonly known as Lhasa beer), produced with pure groundwater, and pure natural mineral water from various parts of Tibet containing different trace elements. Butter tea is a refined product made by fully blending butter, tea, and salt (sometimes with the addition of eggs and walnuts), and it quenches thirst. Tibetan barley wine, produced in both urban and rural areas, is a low-alcohol product made by directly fermenting barley, similar to homemade rice wine in inland China, with a sweet and sour taste, quite different from the strong barley wines of Qinghai and Gansu. Sweet tea is made by simmering black tea, fresh milk or milk powder, and sugar, and is fragrant and delicious.

Traditionally, Tibetans consider silverware and high-end porcelain from inland China to be the finest tableware, while wooden tableware is the most common.
