Foreign currency cannot be used directly in Tibet. Bank checks and convertible cash can be exchanged for RMB at the Bank of China. Credit cards can be used for cash withdrawals at the Bank of China, and credit cards can also be used to pay for hotel expenses at some star-rated hotels. There are four main banks in Lhasa: Bank of China, Agricultural Bank of China, China Construction Bank, and Postal Savings Bank of China. Industrial and Commercial Bank of China and China Merchants Bank are not accepted. Coins are rarely used in Tibet. US dollars cannot be used directly in Tibet and must be exchanged for RMB. Currently, exchange is only possible at the Bank of China in Lhasa.
