Mount Everest, the world's highest peak, and Lake Manasarovar, the world's highest freshwater lake, are both located in Tibet. In addition, there are other scenic spots such as Mount Kailash, the Tanggula Mountains, the Yarlung Tsangpo Grand Canyon, Lake Namtso, and Lake Yamdrok. These mountains and lakes not only offer breathtaking natural beauty but also possess rich cultural significance. Therefore, having some prior knowledge of Tibetan geography, history, and culture before traveling to Tibet can help one gain a deeper understanding of the landscape. Geographically, Tibet is high in the southwest and low in the northeast. Therefore, starting from Lhasa, the altitude sickness intensifies as you travel towards Shigatse and Ngari, but it is relatively milder in Nyingchi, where the scenery becomes gentler and more pleasant.
Tibet's administrative divisions are Lhasa, Shigatse, Nyingchi, Shannan, Nagqu, Chamdo, and Ngari, each with slightly different attractions:
1. Lhasa is the capital of Tibet and is usually the first website visited for a Tibet tour. Centered around Barkhor Street, Lhasa boasts numerous Buddhist monasteries, including Jokhang Temple, Potala Palace, Lop Ngam, Drepung Monastery, and Sera Monastery, all important tourist attractions. Besides the monasteries in Lhasa, Namtso Lake, Nyainqêntanglha Mountain, and Yangbajing are also must-see destinations on typical itineraries.
2. Shigatse is the political, economic, and cultural center of Tsang, and also home to Mount Everest, the world's highest peak. If you don't go to Everest, Tashilhunpo Monastery, Pelkor Chode Monastery, Gyantse Dzong ruins, and Yamdrok Lake are also very attractive attractions in this region.
3. Nyingchi is known as the "Jiangnan of Tibet" and sometimes as the "Switzerland of Tibet," highlighting its gentle and tranquil natural scenery, a stark contrast to the vastness and desolation typical of western China. However, this is only one aspect of Nyingchi's beauty, primarily concentrated around Basum Tso Lake, a popular tourist destination. Another saying about Nyingchi is: "You haven't truly been to Tibet if you haven't been to Medog." Medog is the only county in China without a road access, making its challenging terrain readily apparent.
4. Shannan is often overlooked by travelers because it lacks attractions with the same appeal as Mount Everest, Mount Kailash, and Namtso Lake. However, it is the birthplace of Tibet and boasts many of Tibet's firsts. Among them, Samye Monastery, Yumbulagang Palace, Qingpu Hermitage, the Tibetan King's Tomb, and Changzhu Monastery are all must-see attractions in Shannan.
5. Because Chamdo borders Sichuan and Yunnan, it is one of the essential routes for those traveling the Sichuan-Tibet and Yunnan-Tibet highways. Now that trains are available, fewer and fewer travelers enter Tibet by car, so opportunities to visit the Karuo Cultural Site and Jampaling Monastery in Chamdo are also limited. This is because few people consider Chamdo a must-visit area for their first trip to Tibet.
6. Nagqu is a must-pass area when traveling by train into Tibet. The most popular attractions for travelers are the Skull Wall and the Damxung Horse Racing Festival. However, when traveling into Tibet by train, people usually only see the natural scenery along the way through the train window. If you really want to go to Nagqu, you still need to go to Lhasa first and then make a special trip for this part of the journey. Therefore, few travelers include Nagqu in their itinerary for their first trip to Tibet.
7. Ali is captivating for its natural altitude and the mysterious Guge Kingdom. Mount Kailash, Lake Manasarovar, the ruins of the Guge Kingdom, Tholing Monastery, Zanda Earth Forest, Pangong Tso, and Rutog Rock Paintings are all names frequently mentioned by travelers who yearn for Ali. However, Ali's natural environment is extremely harsh, and the journey takes a long time, so it is not recommended for those new to high altitudes to include it in their itinerary.
This concludes the overview of seven scenic areas in Tibet, describing their attractions and scenic features. We hope this information will be helpful to tourists. Tibet welcomes everyone to visit! Tashi Delek!
