Itinerary Overview
Starting in Lhasa, passing through Yamdrok Lake, Karola Glacier, Gyantse, Shigatse, and finally reaching Everest Base Camp—this is the Tibetan route many dream of. Along the way, you'll experience not only the magnificent natural beauty of lakes and glaciers, but also the rich cultural heritage of temples and ancient cities. Many travelers ask: How long does it take to get from Lhasa to Everest Base Camp? Is the drive arduous? Is it possible to drive yourself? In reality, this journey typically takes four to eight days, depending on your schedule and your physical fitness.
Yamdrok Lake: Plateau Sapphire
After crossing the Gangbala Pass, Yamdrok Lake emerges like a plateau sapphire, its surface color shifting with the light, sometimes emerald green, sometimes deep blue. Many people wonder whether tickets are required for Yamdrok Lake and where the best viewing platforms are. However, the most iconic photo spot is Observation Deck No. 1, where the atmosphere is completely different when viewed from behind or directly above. If time permits, some people also choose to detour to Rito Monastery for a more expansive view of the lake.
Karola Glacier: A close-up world of ice and snow
Continuing west, the massive glacier tongue of Karola Glacier is almost within reach. A common question is: Is Karola Glacier worth stopping at? The answer is yes. At an altitude of approximately 5,400 meters, the scenery is breathtaking, but it's best not to stay too long, especially for first-time plateau visitors, as altitude sickness can easily set in. Remember to bring windproof clothing and sun protection to ensure comfort, even for a short stay.

Gyantse Ancient City and Baiju Temple Thousand Buddha Pagoda
Gyantse is a cultural highlight of the trip. The unique structure of the Thousand Buddha Pagoda at Baikho Monastery, "a pagoda within a pagoda and a pagoda within a temple," is densely covered with murals and Buddha statues, dating back to the 15th century. Many people ask, "What's so special about Gyantse Ancient City?" The answer lies in the intersection of religion and history, which contrasts sharply with the natural landscape, offering travelers a chance to linger and immerse themselves in the culture of the plateau.
Shigatse and Tashilhunpo Monastery
Shigatse is a major center of Tibet's western Tibet, serving as a hub for transportation and supply. Tashilhunpo Monastery, founded in 1447, has served as the residence of successive Panchen Lamas. A common question among travelers is: What are the admission fees and opening hours for Tashilhunpo Monastery? Ticket prices and visiting times can be checked in advance; generally, half a day is sufficient for a visit. Besides the complex and the Golden Dome, the Buddha-drenching event during festivals is not to be missed.
FAQ
Do I need to buy a ticket to Yanghu Lake?
Yes. The Yamdrok Lake scenic area typically charges an entrance fee, ranging from 60 to 120 RMB (varies slightly depending on the entrance and season). Common viewing platforms, such as Viewing Platform No. 1, also have payment points. Cash or mobile payment is recommended.
What is the altitude of Karola Glacier? Is it worth staying there?
The Karola Glacier Viewpoint, at an altitude of approximately 5,400 meters, is one of the most accessible glaciers in Tibet. While a short visit isn't recommended, the scenery is truly captivating, with close-up views of the glacier tongue and cracks, making it well worth a quick stop for photos.
How many days does it take to get from Lhasa to Everest Base Camp? How long is the drive?
A round-trip journey of at least four days is required, taking a straight line: Lhasa to Shigatse, to Everest Base Camp, and back. A standard itinerary typically takes six to eight days, including stops at Yamdrok Lake, glaciers, and temples. The one-way driving distance is approximately 600–700 kilometers, divided into sections: Lhasa to Shigatse takes about seven hours, and Shigatse to Base Camp takes another five to seven hours.
What are the ticket prices and opening hours for Tashilhunpo Monastery?
Tickets cost approximately 100 RMB, though prices may vary depending on the season. Opening hours are generally from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, with special arrangements during festivals. Please be mindful of the temple's rules when visiting the interior, as photography is prohibited in some halls.
Is Everest Base Camp a good place to stay overnight?
Strictly speaking, I don't recommend it. Base Camp is at an altitude of 5,200 meters, and the accommodations are basic, making altitude sickness more likely to occur at night. The restrooms are also quite poor. If you're looking to capture starry skies and sunrises, stay at Rongbuk Monastery or Tingri and then return to Base Camp early in the morning, which is less risky.
Do I need to carry oxygen when I experience altitude sickness? Will I become dependent on it?
It is recommended to carry a portable oxygen tank for emergency use, especially for first-time visitors to Tibet. Short-term oxygen inhalation will not cause dependence, but if symptoms are severe, it is best to descend immediately rather than relying solely on oxygen.
Can you see the Milky Way at night? Which season has the highest probability of seeing it?
The Milky Way is clearly visible at Everest Base Camp, where the weather is clear and light pollution is minimal. The best viewing seasons are April–June and September–October, when the weather is relatively stable and the sky is clear. The heavy cloud cover during the summer rainy season makes stargazing difficult.

Everest Base Camp and Rongbuk Monastery: Highlights of the Journey
Leaving Shigatse and crossing the Gawu La Pass, on clear days, you can see Mount Everest and several other 8,000-meter peaks. Many people wonder: Is it worth staying overnight at Everest Base Camp? The reality is that at an altitude of approximately 5,200 meters, conditions are harsh, restrooms are poor, and sleep quality is often reported to be poor. If your goal is to photograph the stars and the sunrise, consider staying at Rongbuk Monastery or Tingri and returning to Base Camp early in the morning to enjoy the views while minimizing risk.
Rongbuk Monastery, the world's highest monastery, is incredibly close to Mount Everest. Standing on the platform in the early morning, watching the sunrise over the snow-capped peaks, with flag clouds looming, is a dream for many photographers. A common question is: When do flag clouds appear? This depends largely on weather and wind speed, and there's no guarantee, but the probability is higher in autumn and spring.
At base camp at night, the starry sky is astonishingly dense, and the Milky Way is crystal clear. Many people worry: Is oxygen inhalation addictive? In fact, during high-altitude travel, short bursts of oxygen inhalation are a means of relief and will not cause dependence. However, if altitude sickness is severe, the most effective way is to descend immediately.

Health and Equipment
Altitude sickness is a major concern for travelers. It's essential to prepare a pulse oximeter and common medications (pain relievers, gastrointestinal medication, and anti-altitude sickness medication). Three layers of clothing are recommended: a moisture-wicking layer, a thermal layer, and a windproof and rainproof layer. Sleeping bags should ideally be kept to -10°C to -20°C, especially in autumn and winter. Camera and mobile phone batteries drain quickly in cold temperatures, so a power bank and backup batteries are essential.
Cultural etiquette and photography precautions
Many tourists ask: Is photography allowed inside temples? Generally speaking, photography is prohibited inside the main hall, but permitted outside. When encountering pilgrims, circumambulate and walk in a clockwise direction. Avoid walking against the flow or casually photographing worshippers to avoid offending them.
